Welcome to Class, the Class of 2024!

A good teacher starts a new class by introducing himself, what the course is about, and how he will grade the class. In other words, we deal with the basics first.

My name is Livingstone Mukasa. My work experience for the last 23 years has been about helping people make economic progress. I have been involved in product design, development, and introductions to markets, in the manufacturing and service sectors. In the last 8 years, I have been heavily involved in Fintech, building Africa’s first private Micro Pension Fund and doing financial literacy and advisory work. From managing other people’s businesses to starting and managing my own I have learned many lessons that I am inspired to share. I am a well-traveled person and have made friends across the globe. I am a husband, a family man, and a man of faith.
 
This class is about Personal finance and how we can make economic progress: I call it the Steetnomics Class. We will cover improving personal income, managing debt, building an emergency fund, investing for the future, including retirement, managing extended family obligations (black tax), risk management, the political economy related to personal finance, and my favorite topic – financial independence.

Each day Monday to Friday, you will receive one nudge (call it a post). I post on Facebook Pages (Livingstone Mukasa), LinkedIn (Livingstone Mukasa), WhatsApp (Finsense), and Twitter (@Mukasamulya). These will be the main class materials. For those new to my work, I encourage you to read the hundreds of earlier posts I have made through the years and if you can, read my two books: The Great Financial Rebuild (First Published 2020 -Cost UGX 50,000) and Investing for the Future (First Published 2015 – Cost UGX 40,000).

Expected class outcomes are more personal savings and investments, improved incomes, better debt management or better still – no personal debts, financial literacy, asset ownership, and increased productivity as it relates to interacting with capitalism.

I do this class not because I want fame or riches but because I was fortunate to be born in a family that was very poor and yet this did not stop me from breaking out and making economic progress. I am still on the journey but a great journey, demands company and I want you to take it with me. We will learn together and if you have a lesson or feedback to share, it shall be welcome.

What Happens if You Run Out of Money in Retirement?

Last week I had a discussion with one of our members at Mazima Voluntary Individual Retirement Scheme who withdrew his National Social Security Fund (NSSF) benefits last year upon reaching the mandatory age of 55 years.
